IRVING, TX — Republican Beth Van Duyne has won the race for Texas’ 24th Congressional District, the Associated Press projected on Tuesday, and will succeed retiring Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Van Duyne, a former mayor of Irving and former regional administrator at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, led Democrat Candace Valenzuela by more than 4,600 votes following the November 3 general election. Valenzuela conceded the race hours before the AP called the result.
Republicans held all six open Texas congressional seats vacated by retiring GOP incumbents this cycle. Democrats had targeted the suburban Dallas–Fort Worth district after Marchant’s narrow re-election in 2018.
Marchant, who announced in August 2019 that he would not seek re-election, will complete his eighth and final term on January 3, 2021.
