Congressman Marchant is a fiscal conservative, and he came to Congress to work hard to balance the budget and reduce the national debt. To that end, Congressman Marchant supports fiscally responsible legislation that strengthens the budget, controls federal spending, and reduces deficits and debt.
- Congressman Marchant cosponsored the Spending, Deficit, and Debt Control Act of 2009, which would create a process for bringing long-term sustainability to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid; cap federal spending and require that Congress reduce the budget deficit; give budget resolution the force of law; create commissions that reduce wasteful spending and end government shutdowns.
- Congressman Marchant cosponsored the Reducing Barack Obama’s Unsustainable Deficit Act (“REBOUND”), which would repeal the spending portion of the President’s stimulus package (saving taxpayers $460 billion); leave intact the stimulus package’s tax relief and unemployment benefits; prohibit the Treasury Secretary from obligating any further TARP funds (saving taxpayers $150 billion); and require all repayments of TARP money to go exclusively to debt reduction.
